Without the police intervening, the locals had to stay outside their shops and houses, in order to protect them. This was done in many places, including London. In Birmingham, however, three young people were murdered by the rampaging gangs.
The father of one of the victims emerged as a sort of voice of sanity and decency, amidst all the lawlessness. Here is Tariq Jahan addressing the people of his neighborhood:
